Oldsmobile was founded by Mr. Ransom E. Olds in 1897. This auto company has produced over 35 million automobiles with 14 million of them being built in Lansing Michigan. The "Olds" was phased out in 2004. A favorite automobile of classic Oldsmobile fans is the Deluxe 88 was built in the 1950s with the Super 88 following close behind it. There were other full-sized models such as the Fiesta and the Holiday. The "88" was retired in 1999 claiming the title of the longest model name used on American automobiles in history.
In the sixties, Oldsmobile introduced the first turbo-charged engine, the Vista Cruiser, the first front-wheel drive Toronado and the 442 muscle car. The 442 was birthed in 1964 with a 4-barrel carburetor, 2 exhausts and a 4-speed manual transmission. In 1968, the 442 became its own character and was produced with a 455 CID V-8 engine in 1970.
The Cutlas was first produced in 1961 with production lasting throughout 1999. This auto was the top seller of the company in the seventies and eighties. The Cutlas Supreme was expanded to include pillared coupes that contained two-door hardtops, and four-door sedan convertibles. In both 1966-67, it came with a 7.0L 425 CID engine as an option.
The first Oldsmobile Hurst was available in 1968. This auto shared a body design with the Cutlas and the 442, but it did contain a black and Peruvian Silver color scheme. It contained a 390 horse power, Rocket V-8 engine. The OW three-speed Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission permitted manual or automatic shifting.
In 1975, the hatchback sporty auto called the Starfire entered the scene. Production began in 1975 and lasted throughout 1980. We cannot speak of Oldsmosbiles without mentioning the "88". This series was thought to be one of the best performing automobiles because of its light-weight and small size. This car was a forerunner of the beautiful muscle cars from the sixties.
Is it any wonder that classic Oldsmobile fans love these cars? Oldsmobile was known as high-performing cars that left a lasting impression. When I think back in auto history, the first impression that comes to mind is an Oldsmobile. When I think of this brand of car, I immediately think of style, performance and longevity. The master minds behind these cars must have known what they are doing because these cars are still highly sought after by various classic car collectors worldwide.
